I am a sculptural basket maker exploring the intersection of craft, art and design. I harvest plant materials from the surrounding bush, coastal gardens and beaches and salvage rusted and decaying farm detritus and weave them into objects of textural beauty and function for modern spaces. Basketry is non-machinated, therefore it eschews manufacturing and consumerism. I look for broken or discarded remnants from industrial or agricultural manufacturing and make them significant again weaving in elements from nature.
My creations reference both the ephemeral beauty of nature; feathers, pods, cocoons, bones, nests, quills and the detritus of industrial manufacturing; rusted corrugated iron, furniture, machinery, wire. Inspiration comes from the delicate tonal colour changes in the Australian landscape and the form and patina of the materials available in the season or place. The practice of weaving is meditative, drawing from the timelessness of ancient knowledge and women making remarkable functional objects without tools.
In my workshops, people learn which plants from their surroundings are suitable to collect and prepare and how to weave them into a sculptural random weave basket. I am currently making sculptural basketry for exhibition and designing and making pendant lights for public and private commission.
I live outside beautiful Robertson, NSW, Australia with my beloved fella Mat Campbell, our son Banjo and baby Clementine. In 2005 Mat and I co-founded Warp & Weft a small ethical business importing organically dyed, hand spun textiles from Peru and Argentina which we operate from market stalls at weekly markets and festivals. Mat has just planted his first commercial garlic crop.

I was wondering whether you might be interested in doing some weaving here at Riversdale on the day of our HOT Country Festival January 15. You could come and be in residence at Riversdale in the week prior. I think it would be a great thing to engage visitors.

What sort of fee would you request.
HOT Country will have musicians ; Neil Murray, Stiff Gins, Felicity Urquhart and the Wagons; tree house installation; art workshops with Mary here (eg design your bandana and decorate your straw hat); ukulele lesson; whip cracking and generally good relaxing fun.

I am from the newly reopened cheese factory cafe and I now realise your imported gloves and hats are being sold by Francis. I go to the winter magic festival every year and am so excited to know you are in Robertson. I have bought one of the gorgeous hats from you.
