After a creative childhood spent on a wheat farm in rural Australia, she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree, worked in media in Europe and travelled the world, started a fair-trade business selling hand-made naturally dyed textiles from South America and then trained extensively in varied craft techniques under contemporary masters. She has since become known as an innovator in the makers movement and has developed a recognisable visual language that is at once rustic and refined.  Her welded, felted, stitched and woven works bring texture, patina and warmth to modern spaces.

Harriet lives with her husband and two children on an old dairy farm near the beautiful village of Robertson on the coastal escarpment south of Sydney.  She currently works out of a private workshop studio but is available for onsite meetings and consultations.

Ethos

The unifying theme in the projects Harriet takes on is weaving in elements from the natural world, whether in playscapes, sculpture, lighting or education. Working with indigenous weavers in South America and Australia she has witnessed first hand how contemporary craft can lead to financial empowerment and cultural preservation, particularly for women in rural and regional areas. Her aim is to make art and design that stirs in viewers an awareness of their ancient ties to slow hand making and caring for the earth.

Projects

Harriet has many years of experience working on commercial installations, lighting design, art direction, sculpture and outdoor woven pieces with interior designers, architects, home builders. She works independently and can take a projects right through from initial concept development to being present onsite for installation. Each project is carefully considered, innovative, embued with her passionate earthiness and always delivered on time.

Commissions

Harriet designs and makes woven vessels, wall sculpture, pendant lighting and interior fixtures for commercial and residential spaces.

She loves to create work specifically for the site which they will inhabit in consultation with her clients.  (Like this retractable felted apalaca wallhanging which was commissioned  to help hide a big screen television!)

If you would like to start a dialogue about a commission, please get in touch via the contacts page and describe your project or space.
